Cross-border travel
As I leave Naukluft and cruise along the road towards Swakopmund, I realise that I have caught the travel bug. All I want to do is keep on driving along roads less travelled. I imagine myself as a 21st century explorer, crossing borders, traversing rivers, journeying through the Southern African countries of Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia and South Africa.
Instead of stopping in Swakopmund, I head straight for Windhoek where I will plan my cross-border adventure. The sooner I can be off on my travels, the better...the freedom of the road awaits me.
However, when I begin to work out my itinerary, I soon discover that travelling between African countries is not as simple as in Europe where, since the Schengen Agreement abolished border controls between EU countries, it’s easy to go from country to country and cross borders.
Crossing borders in Southern Africa
All eight Southern African countries that I am planning to visit have different regulations governing border controls and varying opening and closing times for border posts. And you have to pay for the privilege to cross into another country! Most car rental companies charge a fee per country and a cross border excess on the insurance, even if you take out a super cover.
As my dream of cross-country exploration starts to fade, I remember that Drive Africa does more than just hire reliable 4x4 vehicles. They also have self-drive options that offer the best customer service and value for money on the market. With that sort of reputation, they can surely help me organise my cross-border adventure.
Drive Africa's unbeatable offers
I am not disappointed. For a fee of R150.- per country, and no further costs or insurance increases Drive Africa can give me a cross-border letters that cover all the Southern African countries I want to visit. That means I can hire a vehicle in Namibia or South Africa and only pay the prescribed cross-border fee per country for travelling into Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Zambia. And unlike other car rental companies, Drive Africa vehicles are allowed into Zambia at no extra cost.
A further bonus is that with Drive Africa, I don't have to specify the exact entry dates for the different countries, which means I can be free to explore and travel where the road takes me. And, what's more, the full comprehensive insurance comes with zero excess. Drive Africa's all inclusive car hire (with unlimited kilometres) for my planned trip through Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and South Africa is unbeatable, especially the cheap border crossings bit. I can't wait to get started. It's time to finalise my itinerary.
My planned adventure
I decide to split my journey into two stages: from Namibia, I will travel to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. Once in South Africa I will go to Drive Africa's office in Bloemfontein from where I can organise the second stage of my journey to Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia.
The first leg of my journey will take me through the Caprivi strip and across the Namibia-Zambia border at the recently opened Wenela border post. Then, the second leg will go from Zambia to the Zimbabwean border post at Kariba border post. And, thirdly, from Zimbabwe towards Mozambique, crossing at the Forbes-Machipanda border post just outside Mutare. The last leg of my adventure will take me from Mozambique into Swaziland via the border post closest to Maputu (known as Namaacha to the Mozambicans and Lomahasha to the Swazi) and from Swaziland to South Africa. I will end this part of my journey in Bloemfontein where Drive Africa has an office. From there, I will plan the second part of my trip, which will include Lesotho, Botswana and end in Namibia. I might even consider a 4x4 hire south africa to continue my journey.
